Upgrading SynergyKM to use 1.3.1

I recently discovered SynergyKM which is a Mac OS X (works on Leopard) frontend for Synergy. All SynergyKM does is write out the config file for Synergy and manipulate the daemon. I noticed that SynergyKM is bundled with Synergy 1.3.0. There was a specific OS X bug in 1.3.0 that was fixed in 1.3.1. Here is how to upgrade the SynergyKM to version 1.3.1.

  1. Download SynergyKM Beta 6 installer
  2. Mount the DMG and run the installer (I installed for the current user only)
  3. Download the Synergy 1.3.1 OSX tarball
  4. Extract the tarball to ~/Downloads/synergy-1.3.1/
  5. We are going to replace the Synergy 1.3.0 binaries bundled with SynergyKM with the 1.3.1 version. Open up a Terminal and run the following:

    cd ~/Library/PreferencePanes/SynergyKM.prefPane/Contents/Resources/Synergyd.app/Contents/Resources/
    mv synergyc synergyc-1.3.0
    mv synergys synergys-1.3.0
    cp ~/Downloads/synergy-1.3.1/synergyc ~/Library/PreferencePanes/SynergyKM.prefPane/Contents/Resources/Synergyd.app/Contents/Resources/
    cp ~/Downloads/synergy-1.3.1/synergys ~/Library/PreferencePanes/SynergyKM.prefPane/Contents/Resources/Synergyd.app/Contents/Resources/
  6. Open up the SynergyKM prefpane, go to the About panel
  7. SynergyKM About

  8. Configure Synergy, turn it on and you’re done!

Thanks for this post! I had been struggling with getting everything to work right with no GUI on the Mac OS X 10.5 and this made it very easy!

Does this fix the screen saver sync?

Thanks buddy. Was wondering where to copy the new files to. Since my server was already started I had to do a full system reset. I tried killing the process, but it left some resources in a non accessible state. So hard reset seems to be the easiest way to get it working if you already have the server up and going.

Thanks for this post. For controlling two Macs with the same mouse and keyboard, I did find another free alternative (donation-ware) that works perfectly for me “out of the box” for the same purposes. It’s called Teleport. See http://abyssoft.com/software/teleport/

In addition to using the same mouse and keyboard for multiple Macs, you can sync the pasteboards, drag-and-drop files between Macs, etc. It appears to be further along in its development than SynergyKM.

I have it connecting a Mac with Leopard to a Mac with Tiger. Anyway, I mention this because I found it useful myself, when someone mentioned it on another blog.

Any way to get SynergyKM to start the server at login? Cant see an option for it.
